Duluth, MN – The National Weather Service offices in Duluth and Des Moines are warning residents across northern Minnesota and north-central Iowa to brace for strong northwest winds continuing through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the NWS, winds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph will persist into the evening, affecting a broad stretch of counties including Aitkin, Pine, Cass, Crow Wing, and Mille Lacs Band tribal lands in Minnesota, as well as Emmet, Kossuth, Winnebago, Worth, and Black Hawk Counties in Iowa.

Forecasters caution that loose outdoor objects, garbage bins, and light patio furniture may be blown around, while tree limbs could snap under the stress of stronger gusts, potentially leading to isolated power outages.

Motorists—especially those driving high-profile vehicles such as vans and semis—should use extra caution on rural highways and bridges, where crosswinds may be particularly strong.

The advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. CDT, with conditions expected to gradually improve by sunset as the system moves southeast. Cooler, calmer air will settle across both states overnight.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor belongings and stay updated through the National Weather Service Duluth and Des Moines forecast offices for live updates.
