Minnesota & Iowa – A powerful winter storm has shut down major roadways, including stretches of I-90 and I-80, as blizzard conditions continue into Thursday. Authorities urge residents to avoid travel, with heavy snowfall, gusty winds, and low visibility making roads dangerous across Minnesota and Iowa.
According to the National Weather Service, as of early Wednesday morning, snow-covered roads and whiteout conditions led to widespread closures across southern Minnesota and western Iowa. I-90 is closed near Albert Lea, while I-80 remains shut down west of Des Moines. First responders and maintenance crews are working to clear highways, but drifting snow and ice are creating ongoing hazards.
Travel is not advised across much of the region, and those who must drive should prepare for delays, icy conditions, and possible detours. Officials recommend carrying an emergency kit, including blankets, food, and water, in case of becoming stranded.
Looking ahead, snowfall is expected to taper off late Thursday, but strong winds could continue to create blowing snow and poor visibility. By Friday, temperatures will remain cold, with highs in the teens and 20s. The weekend brings a slight warm-up, with temperatures reaching the 30s by Sunday. However, another storm system could bring additional snow early next week.
Residents should check with local authorities for road conditions and stay updated on weather alerts.
