Duluth, MN – A Gale Watch has been issued for Lake Superior’s North Shore, with hazardous marine conditions expected Sunday, October 5.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, southwest winds of 15 to 25 knots, with gusts up to 40 knots, could develop Sunday morning and last into the evening. Waves between 4 and 7 feet are possible, creating dangerous conditions for boaters.
The advisory covers waters from Grand Portage down to Duluth, including Grand Marais, Taconite Harbor, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors. The strongest conditions are anticipated late Sunday morning through early evening, when visibility may also be reduced due to wind-driven spray.
Officials warn that strong winds can capsize or damage smaller vessels and make navigation hazardous. Mariners are urged to remain in port, seek shelter, or secure boats ahead of time. The NWS advises planning adjustments now, as conditions could quickly deteriorate Sunday.
This alert comes at the peak of the fall storm season on Lake Superior, when rapid weather changes often catch boaters off guard. Residents and visitors near the shore are encouraged to monitor updates throughout the weekend.
