Duluth, Minnesota – A stretch of warm, dry air building over Minnesota is setting the stage for dangerous fire weather conditions by Sunday, with temperatures in Duluth expected to soar into the upper 80s and gusty winds increasing the risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect for much of northern Minnesota through Sunday, May 11. Today’s weather includes partly cloudy skies with a chance of sprinkles, especially near the North Shore, and southwest winds around 5 to 10 mph. By Sunday, winds could reach 15 mph or more, combining with low humidity and dry vegetation to create conditions ripe for rapid fire spread.

Communities from International Falls to Hibbing, and eastward toward Grand Marais, are urged to stay alert as fire danger increases. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should secure spark-producing equipment and avoid activities that could ignite dry grass or brush.

This weekend’s weather marks one of the warmest stretches so far this spring, with highs climbing from the low 70s today to near 88°F by Sunday in inland areas. Conditions will stay mostly sunny through the weekend, with little chance for meaningful rainfall.

Fire weather alerts remain in effect through Sunday night. Additional warnings may be issued as conditions evolve.
