Saint Paul, Minnesota – Fire danger surged across Minnesota on Mother’s Day as temperatures climbed into the low 90s and gusty winds fanned already dry conditions, creating a volatile wildfire risk from Madison to the Twin Cities.

According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, temperatures Sunday afternoon approached record highs between 85°F and 95°F, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph in areas like Marshall and Madison. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect through Monday for much of southern and central Minnesota due to the combination of extreme heat, dry vegetation, and low humidity.

Cities including Mankato, Saint Cloud, and Hutchinson hit the upper 80s and low 90s by late afternoon. Wind gusts above 30 mph swept through the Minnesota River Valley, further increasing fire spread potential. Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning, delay brush clearing, and remain vigilant near open fields or wooded areas. “Even a small spark could ignite a fast-moving blaze,” warned NWS staff.

The fire weather threat will persist through Tuesday as hot and breezy conditions continue statewide. Highs will stay in the 85° to 90° range with little overnight relief. Residents are advised to stay informed and expect additional advisories if conditions worsen.
