Duluth, Minn. – Strong winds, dry air, and unusually warm temperatures have triggered a Red Flag Warning across northeast Minnesota through Tuesday evening, heightening wildfire risk in Duluth, Ely, Grand Marais, and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, critical fire weather conditions will persist through at least Tuesday night, with humidity levels dropping below 20%, wind gusts topping 30 mph, and temperatures climbing into the upper 70s and 80s. The warning also extends into northwest Wisconsin, including Ashland and Hurley.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and officials from the Minnesota DNR have enforced strict burn restrictions across affected counties. Residents are urged to avoid any activities that could generate sparks, including using fire pits, grills, or power tools in grassy or wooded areas. Lake-goers are also reminded that despite warm air temperatures, water remains dangerously cold and hypothermia is still a risk.

This marks one of the season’s most widespread fire weather events, echoing similar conditions from May 2021 when several small wildfires ignited across the Arrowhead region.

The Red Flag Warning remains in effect through Tuesday evening, with the potential for additional alerts if conditions persist into midweek. Residents should monitor local updates and check with the MN DNR for the latest fire restrictions.
