Duluth, Minnesota – A fall mix of fog, rip currents, and scattered storms will make Friday morning in northern Minnesota dangerous for drivers and swimmers alike.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Friday for much of the Northland, with visibility dropping below a quarter mile on key routes like Highway 61 and U.S. 53. Drivers are urged to slow down, use fog lights, and leave extra distance during the morning commute.
On Lake Superior, a Beach Hazard Statement begins Friday afternoon for Park Point and Wisconsin Point beaches, where strong northeast winds and rip currents will make swimming dangerous. Waves of 4 to 6 feet are expected.
Thunderstorms are also possible Friday evening, especially along and north of Highway 2. A few may bring small hail, gusty winds, and lightning. Conditions ease into Saturday, but weekend breezes will keep the chill in the air.
While the worst fog lifts by midday Friday, additional rounds of storms could return Sunday into Monday. Anyone with weekend plans on the lake or road should monitor updates and remain alert to changing conditions.
