Duluth, MN – Smoke from wildfires in northern Alberta and British Columbia will continue to cause hazy skies and slightly elevated air quality index (AQI) levels in northern Minnesota today and Thursday.

According to the US National Weather Service in Duluth, no unhealthy air quality is expected, but moderate AQI levels are possible. This is due to the smoke being transported southward into the region. Additionally, northern Minnesota will experience one last day of pop-up showers and storms this afternoon and early evening before dry weather sets in for Thursday and Friday.

The National Weather Service also forecasts a return of thunderstorm chances this weekend, with strong to severe storm potential during the afternoon and evening on both Saturday and Sunday. The better severe storm potential is on Sunday, though details on timing and locations remain uncertain.

Temperatures and humidity are expected to increase steadily into the weekend, with some locations approaching 90 degrees on Saturday and Sunday. Today, a northeast wind off Lake Superior may keep coastal areas slightly cooler.
