Mankato, Minn. – Streets and basements in Mankato are under water late Wednesday night as heavy thunderstorms dropped up to 5 inches of rain, triggering a flash flood warning in central Blue Earth and southeastern Nicollet counties.

According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, law enforcement reported ongoing flash flooding shortly before 10 p.m. Additional rainfall of up to 1 inch is possible before the warning expires at 2:45 a.m. Thursday. The flooding is impacting small creeks, city streets, and low-lying areas across Mankato, North Mankato, Lake Crystal, Eagle Lake, and surrounding towns.

Emergency officials urge residents to avoid travel and never attempt to drive through flooded roads. “Turn around, don’t drown” warnings are in effect, and all non-essential travel should be postponed until conditions improve.

Local police are monitoring the situation near Minneopa State Park and in neighborhoods south of St. Clair and Mapleton, where water has overwhelmed drainage systems.

This is the heaviest rainfall event in the region since early summer. Residents are advised to stay alert, charge devices, and prepare for additional flash flood advisories if rainfall continues overnight.

The Flash Flood Warning remains active until 2:45 a.m. CDT Thursday.
