Minnesota wakes up to shimmering pavement and brake lights glowing off icy streets as winter tightens its grip across the Twin Cities. A light wintry mix is already creating slick travel conditions early this Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain mixed with snow and sleet moved across central and southern Minnesota before sunrise. A thin glaze of ice has formed in spots, especially on bridges, ramps, and untreated roads. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through the early morning hours.

Temperatures hover near 30 degrees, just cold enough for liquid precipitation to freeze on contact. Even brief bursts of freezing rain can turn intersections slick within minutes. Drivers along I-94, I-35W, and Highway 52 should expect reduced traction during the morning commute.

Snow amounts stay light, generally under a half inch, but ice is the bigger concern. Crews continue treating major roadways, though shaded and less-traveled streets may remain slippery longer. Slow speeds and extra following distance are essential through mid-morning.

Conditions gradually improve later this morning as precipitation tapers and clouds thin. Skies turn partly sunny by afternoon, with highs reaching the mid-30s. Melting may occur during the day, but refreezing becomes a concern again after sunset as temperatures drop.

Tuesday brings quieter weather but colder air. Highs remain near 31 degrees under partly sunny skies. By Wednesday, clouds increase again with highs in the mid-30s, setting the stage for unsettled conditions heading toward Christmas Eve.

This early-week system serves as a winter reminder. Flash freezing can follow daytime melting, creating black ice overnight. Travelers heading out early should allow extra time and check road conditions before leaving.
