Duluth, MN – Strong northeast winds created hazardous conditions on Western Lake Superior Sunday, with waves reaching up to five feet in some locations, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Duluth.
A Small Craft Advisory was issued Sunday afternoon as gusts near 25 knots were recorded near McQuade Harbor and Twin Ports. The NWS said boaters and smaller vessels should exercise caution due to the rough waters and strong winds.
According to the marine forecast, winds and waves are expected to diminish overnight Sunday and into Monday, with calmer conditions across most of the lake by Tuesday. Forecast data shows wave heights decreasing to 1 foot or less across the majority of the Western Lake Superior shoreline early in the week.
The advisory highlights impacts along multiple ports, including Duluth, Grand Marais, Silver Bay, and Chequamegon Bay. While boaters may see calmer conditions by midweek, the NWS warns that northeast winds are expected to pick up again toward the end of the week, potentially leading to another round of rough waters.
Recreational boaters and anglers are urged to check the latest marine forecasts before heading out.
