Duluth, MN – A powerful spring blizzard is sweeping across parts of northeastern Minnesota, prompting an urgent Blizzard Warning through 10 p.m. Wednesday for areas along the North Shore, including Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Grand Marais.
The National Weather Service issued the alert Wednesday afternoon, citing severe whiteout conditions, hazardous travel, and wind gusts reaching up to 55 mph. According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, snowfall totals between 4 to 8 inches are expected by the end of the storm, with dangerous blowing and drifting snow significantly reducing visibility.
Officials warn that travel may become life-threatening, especially along Highway 61, which winds along Lake Superior’s shoreline through Southern Lake and Southern Cook counties. The blizzard is also impacting the Grand Portage Reservation, where conditions are particularly treacherous.
Visibility could drop below a quarter-mile, and strong winds may cause tree damage and knock down power lines. The blizzard’s peak intensity is expected during the Wednesday evening commute, and residents are being strongly urged to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.
Authorities stress that if travel cannot be avoided, drivers should carry a winter survival kit and remain with their vehicle if stranded. Real-time travel conditions can be found through Minnesota 511 at www.511mn.org.
This latest storm comes as a reminder that April snowstorms can still pack a dangerous punch across the Upper Midwest.
