Minneapolis, MN – A powerful winter blast will grip Minnesota from November 28–30, bringing heavy snow, dangerous wind chills, and treacherous travel across the state through the Black Friday weekend. The storm marks one of the strongest early-season cold outbreaks of the year, combining lake-enhanced snow and Arctic air.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Twin Cities and Duluth, a moderate to high risk of heavy snow extends across northern and central Minnesota. Totals of 8–12 inches are possible across the Iron Range, Brainerd Lakes, and Duluth areas, with 3–6 inches possible in the Twin Cities metro. Winds gusting 30–40 mph will lead to whiteout conditions, drifting snow, and subzero wind chills by late Saturday.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, dangerous travel conditions are expected along I-35, U.S. 2, and Highway 53 beginning Friday afternoon. Blowing snow and rapidly falling temperatures could cause flash freezing on untreated roads. Air travelers at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport should also expect de-icing delays and potential cancellations.

Residents are urged to limit travel during heavy snow, dress in multiple layers, and prepare homes and vehicles for Arctic conditions. Those traveling after Thanksgiving should monitor local advisories and avoid overnight driving when wind chills will dip to –10°F or lower in northern counties.
