Minneapolis, Minnesota – Smoke from Canadian wildfires will keep air quality at unhealthy levels across central Minnesota through at least 9 a.m. Thursday.

According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect for the Twin Cities and surrounding counties, including Anoka, Hennepin, Wright, and Ramsey. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is projected to reach “Red” levels, meaning sensitive groups — including people with asthma, lung or heart conditions, children, and older adults — should avoid prolonged outdoor activity.

Smoke has settled into the region due to a cold front that moved across the state Monday night. Calm winds and stagnant conditions have prevented the pollution from clearing. While some gradual improvement is possible by Thursday afternoon, the alert remains active due to continued health concerns.

Residents are urged to stay indoors, reduce vehicle trips, avoid outdoor burning, and keep windows closed overnight. The Minnesota Department of Transportation recommends limiting highway travel on routes such as I-94 and Highway 169 unless necessary.
