Minneapolis, MN – Hazardous travel conditions are expected across Minneapolis and the Twin Cities metro Thursday as gusty winds, blowing snow, and a rapid temperature drop combine to create dangerous flash freeze conditions.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen office, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. CST Thursday for much of central and eastern Minnesota, including Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, Dakota, Washington, Scott, and Carver counties. Northwest winds are expected to gust between 40 and 50 miles per hour as an Arctic front moves through the region.

Snow accumulations are expected to be light — generally an inch or less — but forecasters warn that strong winds will blow snow around, significantly reducing visibility at times. Brief snow squalls may develop Thursday afternoon, producing localized whiteout conditions with little warning.

The most dangerous conditions are expected later Thursday as temperatures plunge rapidly into the single digits and below zero behind the front. Meteorologists say this sudden drop could lead to a flash freeze, causing any snow or residual moisture on untreated roads, sidewalks, and bridges to freeze almost instantly.

The hazardous conditions are expected to impact both the Thursday morning and evening commutes, with the evening commute posing the greatest risk for icy roads. Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches, potentially causing isolated power outages.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Pedestrians are also warned to use caution, as sidewalks, steps, and driveways may become icy.

Residents are encouraged to monitor road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511mn.org before traveling. Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Thursday night, though bitter cold will linger into Friday.
