Minnesota is facing a heightened risk of fire danger with a Red Flag Warning in effect across central and southern regions, lasting until 9 p.m. Monday, May 12. Windy, dry conditions will continue to fuel fire risks, especially in open areas with dry vegetation. In addition, an Air Quality Alert has been issued, making outdoor activities potentially hazardous for sensitive groups.

According to the National Weather Service, sustained winds of 20-30 mph will create critical fire weather conditions through Monday afternoon, including gusts of up to 40 mph. Low humidity levels of around 15% will only heighten the fire danger. Anyone in affected areas should avoid outdoor burning, refrain from using lawn mowers, and avoid excessive vehicle use that could spark fires.

By Tuesday, temperatures will rise to the upper 80s, continuing the dry conditions that exacerbate fire risks. Areas like Minneapolis and the surrounding counties could see highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, with gusty winds lasting throughout the day. The combination of high temperatures, dry ground, and wind make this a dangerous time for fire outbreaks.

Additionally, sensitive groups across the area will face poor air quality due to ground-level ozone and particulate pollution. People with respiratory issues such as asthma, heart disease, or lung conditions should limit outdoor activities, particularly from noon to 9 p.m. on Monday.

As temperatures continue to climb through midweek, expect similar conditions through Wednesday, with a chance of thunderstorms on Thursday. Stay informed of any updated warnings from local authorities.
