MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – A burst of unseasonable warmth will fuel thunderstorms across southern Minnesota Friday before a sharp cooldown clears skies for a crisp, sunny weekend. The late-week system could bring brief downpours, gusty winds, and slick spots for drivers heading along I-94 and I-35 during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, scattered showers will build Thursday night into Friday morning, followed by a line of thunderstorms that may drop up to a half inch of rain. South winds gusting near 25 mph will make the 70s feel even warmer ahead of a cold front expected by nightfall. The front will push drier, cooler air into the Twin Cities region by early Saturday, restoring more typical mid-October air for leaf viewing and fall events.

By Saturday morning, skies will clear with highs near 62°F, ideal for pumpkin patch visits, park walks, and fall cleanups. West winds could still gust near 15 mph, but the sunshine will return in full force. Sunday continues mild and bright before another cooling trend arrives early next week.

Travelers should allow extra time Friday due to potential wet roads and gusty crosswinds. Residents are advised to secure outdoor decorations, keep drainage clear, and plan indoor alternatives for Friday evening activities.
