Minneapolis, Minnesota – A sweltering heat wave will grip the Twin Cities and surrounding counties Tuesday, sending heat index values soaring to near 98° and raising the risk of heat-related illness from noon to 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, a heat advisory is now in effect for Hennepin, Anoka, Ramsey, Washington, Carver, Scott, and Dakota counties. The alert warns that hot temperatures combined with high humidity could create dangerous conditions, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, seniors, and those without access to air conditioning.
Cities including Minneapolis, St. Paul, Blaine, Stillwater, Shakopee, and Hastings are all under advisory. Health officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, drink extra fluids, and seek air-conditioned spaces if possible. Cooling centers will be available throughout the metro, and neighbors are encouraged to check on elderly relatives or those living alone.
The advisory may lead to delays for outdoor workers, increased risk of vehicle breakdowns, and strain on power grids during peak afternoon hours. Minneapolis Public Works and local utilities are monitoring the situation closely.
Temperatures are expected to ease overnight, but the National Weather Service cautions that additional heat advisories could be issued later this week. Residents should monitor local alerts and prepare for more summer extremes as July continues.
