Minneapolis–St. Paul, MN — A colder pattern is settling in across the Twin Cities this weekend, bringing falling temperatures Saturday and a brief chance for light snow before a gradual warm-up ahead of Christmas.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, Saturday, December 20, will see temperatures fall throughout the day, even as skies begin to clear by the afternoon. Highs are expected to reach only 20 to 25 degrees, with breezy conditions adding an extra chill. Overnight lows will dip to between 5 degrees below zero and 5 above, making for a very cold Saturday night.
On Sunday, clouds will increase again as the next weak system approaches. High temperatures are forecast to range from 20 to 35 degrees, depending on location. Forecasters say there is a chance of light snow late Sunday night, though any accumulation is expected to be minor.
The system may linger into Monday, bringing a chance of light snow early, followed by mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures will moderate slightly, with highs climbing into the 30s to near 40 degrees and overnight lows holding in the teens to mid-20s.
Beyond Monday, the National Weather Service expects a gradual warming trend through midweek, with generally dry conditions dominating the forecast. While temperatures will remain seasonably cool, the warming trend should ease travel concerns as Christmas approaches.
Forecasters note that while this weekend brings classic Minnesota winter conditions, no major winter storms are expected at this time. Drivers should still be cautious during the cold nights and any brief periods of light snow, especially on untreated roads.
With holiday travel increasing, residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and allow extra time for early-morning travel.
