Minnesota – A cold, slick glaze is beginning to take shape across the Twin Cities, and what looks like wet pavement could quickly turn icy within hours. Sidewalks and bridges may become hazardous fast as temperatures hover near freezing.

According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, a winter weather advisory is in effect with a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain developing through the day and intensifying into the evening. Ice accumulations up to a quarter inch and snow totals near 1 inch are expected, especially across eastern Minnesota and into western Wisconsin.

Across Minneapolis, St. Paul, and surrounding communities like Bloomington and Maple Grove, travel conditions will deteriorate quickly. I-94, I-35W, and Highway 62 could see slick spots develop on overpasses first. Even brief bursts of freezing rain can create sudden black ice.

Plan for slower travel and allow extra stopping distance. This is the time of year when flash freezing becomes a major risk, especially after daytime melting. Keep boots with traction ready and avoid sudden movements on sidewalks.

By Thursday morning, precipitation begins to taper, but roads may remain icy during the commute. Additional rain and snow chances return Friday into Saturday, keeping conditions unsettled into the weekend.

A brighter trend arrives by Sunday with sunshine and highs near the mid-40s, offering a break from the wintry pattern. Warmer air is expected to build into next week, signaling a more consistent spring setup.

If you’re heading out today, take it slow and stay alert. Are roads already turning slick in your neighborhood?
