Minneapolis, Minnesota – Drivers along I-94 and I-35W will see a dramatic shift from springlike warmth to soaking rain within 24 hours, with temperatures climbing near 60 degrees Thursday before steady rainfall arrives by 7 a.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, highs will steadily rise through Thursday, reaching the upper 50s to near 60 across much of southern Minnesota. Western suburbs may warm fastest Thursday afternoon, creating mild road conditions and rapid snowmelt in shaded areas.

By early Friday morning, a storm system pushes widespread rain into the metro. Periods of moderate rainfall could impact the morning commute along I-94, Highway 100 and I-494. Rainfall totals approaching three-quarters of an inch are possible in southern Minnesota, with isolated embedded thunder south of the metro.

Temperatures Friday will range from the mid-40s to near 60 degrees, depending on location and timing of the heaviest rain. Gusty winds may also develop, creating spray and reduced visibility for drivers during heavier downpours.

Communities including St. Paul, Bloomington and Eagan should prepare for ponding on roads and slower travel speeds during peak commute hours. Clear storm drains where possible and allow extra stopping distance on wet pavement.

Rain tapers later Friday night, but additional updates may follow as the system tracks across the Upper Midwest and impacts travel across southern Minnesota.
