Minneapolis–St. Paul, Minnesota — A round of snow is expected to move into the Twin Cities late tonight and continue through Sunday, creating slick travel conditions across much of the metro area. According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities, snowfall accumulations of 1 to 2.5 inches are forecast, with the highest totals expected in parts of central and southern Minnesota.
Snow will develop overnight Saturday and persist into Sunday morning, impacting major travel corridors including Interstate 94, I-35, I-494, and I-694. While snowfall amounts are not extreme, the timing may affect early Sunday travel, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Motorists should plan for reduced traction and slower travel speeds, particularly during the morning hours.
Saturday will remain mostly sunny and cold ahead of the system, with daytime highs only reaching the mid to upper teens. As snow moves in overnight, temperatures will fall into the single digits and lower teens, allowing snow to accumulate efficiently on road surfaces. Winds are expected to remain light, limiting blowing snow but not eliminating the risk of slick conditions.
On Sunday, light snow will continue into the daytime hours before tapering off. High temperatures will range from the mid-20s to mid-30s, depending on location. While some melting may occur on treated roadways, shaded and less-traveled areas may remain icy into the afternoon.
Looking ahead, quieter weather returns early next week with near-normal temperatures for late January. Monday through Wednesday will feature partly cloudy skies, highs mainly in the teens to mid-20s, and overnight lows frequently near or below 10 degrees.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts, allow extra travel time, and use caution if driving during snowfall. Even modest accumulations can create hazardous conditions when combined with cold temperatures and overnight timing.
