Minneapolis, MN – Widespread snow showers combined with strong winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions across the Minneapolis area today.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities office, another round of light, fluffy snow will move through late this morning through the afternoon, with most areas receiving between ½ and 1 inch, and localized totals up to 2 inches possible. Snow may linger as flurries into early Thursday.

While snowfall amounts are relatively light, gusty winds are the primary concern. Winds are expected to gust between 30 and 40 mph, causing blowing snow and rapidly changing visibility, especially in open areas and along east–west roadways.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect today for parts of western and southern Minnesota, where blowing snow is expected to create the most significant travel impacts. Even within the Twin Cities metro, drivers should expect snow-covered patches and slippery conditions, particularly during the afternoon and evening commute.

Travel on Interstate 94, Interstate 35W, Interstate 35E, and Highway 62 may be slowed by brief visibility drops and drifting snow. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are especially vulnerable.

The National Weather Service also noted that dangerously cold Arctic air will arrive later this week, with extreme wind chills expected Thursday night through Saturday, potentially prolonging roadway impacts as snow refreezes.

Commuters, delivery drivers, and students are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and monitor forecast updates as conditions change throughout the day.
