Wisconsin — Snow skims sideways across city streets, wind rattles signs along Lake Michigan, and the cold cuts through layers within minutes. Winter conditions are active and demanding attention across southeast Wisconsin today.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee, a Winter Weather Advisory and Cold Weather Advisory remain in effect through midday. Northwest winds gusting 35 to 40 mph are causing areas of blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility at times. Wind chills plunge between 23 and 30 degrees below zero, creating dangerous exposure conditions.
Light snow showers continue this morning with little additional accumulation, but impacts remain high. Blowing snow affects major routes including I-94, I-43, and surface streets during the MLK Day commute. Even brief bursts can quickly drop visibility, especially in open areas and near the lakeshore.
Temperatures stay in the single digits today, with wind chills remaining well below zero through tonight. Any snow that melts under daytime sun will refreeze fast, increasing the risk of black ice on bridges, ramps, and untreated sidewalks. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
Conditions ease slightly Tuesday. Sunshine returns, and winds relax, though highs only reach the mid-teens. Attention then shifts to Tuesday night into Wednesday, when another round of snow develops. Several inches of accumulation are possible by Wednesday morning, adding new travel challenges.
By midweek, highs climb into the mid-20s, still cold but more manageable. Another cold surge may arrive late week, keeping winter firmly in control. NOAA’s longer-range outlook continues to favor an active Great Lakes pattern with frequent snow chances.
Slow down on the roads today, limit outdoor exposure, and bring pets inside. Keep winter gear handy as conditions can change quickly.
