Wisconsin – Damp pavement glistens under early light this morning as fog thins and colder air quietly settles in across southeast Wisconsin. What looks harmless at first glance could turn slick fast, especially for drivers crossing bridges or elevated roads during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee, drizzle and fog cleared as temperatures dropped below freezing in some spots. Untreated roads, overpasses, and sidewalks may develop slick patches as colder air settles in. The risk is highest north and west of the Milwaukee metro, where temperatures dipped closer to the upper 20s.
Around Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, and Washington counties, drivers should stay alert on I-94, I-43, and local connectors. Even brief freezing can turn wet pavement into a thin glaze. To be fair, sunshine arrives later today, but shaded areas may stay slick longer.
Through Wednesday, clouds return with highs near 40. Light rain becomes possible by Wednesday evening and again late Thursday into Friday. While snow is not expected, temperatures hovering near freezing keep black ice on the table during late-night and early-morning travel windows.
Christmas Day looks mostly cloudy and cool, topping out near 40. Roads stay wet, not frozen, for now. Still, this is the first week of Winter, and conditions can change quickly after sunset. Meteorologists are watching for a colder push late in the weekend, with highs falling sharply by Sunday.
Plan extra time this morning. Slow down on ramps and bridges. Keep distance between vehicles. Traveling home after Christmas? Conditions may deteriorate quickly later this week as temperatures fluctuate.
