Milwaukee, Wisconsin — Thunderstorms Tuesday evening could bring hail to southeast Wisconsin before colder air turns rain into snow by Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday evening, particularly across far southeast Wisconsin, including the Milwaukee metro area.
Forecasters say the primary hazards with stronger storms will be hail and lightning, with the region under a Marginal to Slight Risk (Level 1–2 of 5) for severe weather.
Rain associated with the storm system is expected to continue overnight Tuesday, before changing to a wintry mix and snow Wednesday morning as colder air moves into the region.
Meteorologists say parts of central Wisconsin could see around 1 inch of snow, while southeast Wisconsin may see lighter accumulations of about a half inch or less.
While snowfall totals are expected to remain relatively light, the timing could affect the Wednesday morning commute, especially where slushy snow accumulates on roads.
Cities including Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Waukesha and Madison may see thunderstorms Tuesday night followed by rain transitioning to snow early Wednesday.
Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware Tuesday evening and overnight, especially if thunderstorms become stronger across southeast Wisconsin.
For commuters and early morning travelers, wet or slushy roads Wednesday morning could lead to slower travel conditions.
