Southern Wisconsin — A significant winter storm is underway across the region today, with snowfall rates expected to intensify rapidly through the afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan warns that travel conditions will deteriorate quickly as heavy snow spreads in and visibility drops.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through tonight and into early Sunday morning. Widespread snowfall totals of 8 to 12 inches are still on track across most of southern and east-central Wisconsin. Forecasters note that localized amounts could exceed 14 inches, particularly south of I-94/US-18 and near the Kettle Moraine region, where system track proximity and terrain influences will enhance snowfall.

The heaviest snow and worst travel impacts are expected from late this morning through this evening, when snowfall rates may exceed 1 inch per hour at times. A detailed timing graphic from NWS shows peak hourly rates from 12 PM to 9 PM, especially in communities such as Milwaukee, Madison, Waukesha, Fond du Lac, Janesville, and Sheboygan.

Road conditions are expected to worsen quickly, with snow accumulating efficiently on untreated surfaces. Winds may also contribute to areas of blowing snow, particularly east of Madison and toward Lake Michigan, where lighter, drier snow will make visibility reductions more likely.

Even after the heaviest snow ends tonight, nuisance blowing snow and slick travel will persist into Sunday afternoon, especially across eastern counties.

Officials urge residents to avoid travel today and this evening if possible. The storm remains on track, and forecasters warn against becoming complacent due to lighter accumulations early this morning.
