Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Patchy freezing drizzle early Monday morning may create slick driving conditions across parts of southeast Wisconsin, particularly on untreated roadways near major highways.

According to the National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan, freezing drizzle has been decreasing in coverage, but pockets are expected to linger through the pre-dawn hours, increasing the risk for isolated slick spots. The concern is greatest on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses, where even a light glaze can reduce traction.

The weather service advises motorists to exercise caution if traveling early Monday, especially along Interstate 94, Interstate 41, and US-41, as well as county roads and residential streets. The greatest risk period extends through approximately 7 a.m., when temperatures remain cold enough for drizzle to freeze on contact.

While widespread icing is not expected, forecasters emphasize that even brief freezing drizzle can cause hazardous conditions, particularly in areas that have not been pre-treated. Drivers may encounter sudden slick patches with little visual warning.

As temperatures gradually rise later in the morning, the threat of freezing drizzle is expected to diminish. However, shaded areas and elevated surfaces may remain slick slightly longer, especially where road treatment has been limited.

Early-shift workers, school commuters, and long-distance travelers are most likely to be impacted by the timing of the hazard. Slowing down, increasing following distance, and allowing extra travel time are recommended during the morning commute.

Residents are encouraged to check local road conditions before heading out and remain alert for rapidly changing driving conditions. Additional updates will be issued if conditions worsen or linger longer than expected.
