Milwaukee, Wis. – Thick fog is making travel treacherous on Lake Michigan Thursday, with visibility dropping to a mile or less from Sheboygan south to Port Washington and across waters extending into Michigan.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a dense fog advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m., covering nearshore waters from Sheboygan to Whitehall, Michigan. Mariners from Port Washington to North Point Light and across mid-lake areas are urged to use extreme caution.
The fog is expected to make navigation difficult along busy boating corridors, including recreational and shipping traffic near Pentwater and Grand Haven. Reduced visibility poses risks for both large vessels and smaller watercraft, especially during the evening hours.
Officials warn anyone on the water to use fog signals, keep all running lights on, and rely on radar or compass navigation. Those without proper equipment are advised to stay docked until conditions improve.
The advisory is set to expire at 10 p.m., but weather officials caution that pockets of fog may linger overnight into Friday morning. Mariners should monitor updates before heading back onto the water.
