Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Areas of dense fog are creating hazardous travel conditions across parts of southern Wisconsin Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until at least 9 a.m. CST, though conditions could linger longer in some areas.
Visibility in some locations has dropped well below one mile, and drivers may encounter sudden reductions in visibility while traveling.
Communities including Milwaukee, Madison, Racine, Kenosha, and West Bend are among the areas experiencing fog early Friday.
Drivers along major routes such as Interstate 94, Interstate 43, Interstate 41, and U.S. Highway 18 could encounter slow traffic, difficult driving conditions, and limited visibility, especially during the morning commute.
Transportation cameras across the region have already shown thick fog covering roadways and intersections, making it difficult for drivers to see traffic signals, vehicles, and lane markings.
Meteorologists say the fog will likely continue through the morning until widespread rain arrives later in the day, which may gradually help improve visibility.
However, some areas — especially near Lake Michigan and low-lying terrain — may continue to see fog longer than inland communities.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights when traveling in foggy conditions.
Using high-beam headlights can actually reduce visibility by reflecting light off fog droplets, making it harder to see the road ahead.
Commuters across southern Wisconsin should allow extra travel time and remain alert for changing visibility conditions during the morning hours.
Conditions are expected to improve later Friday as weather systems move through the region.
