Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Drivers along I-94 and Highway 50 are encountering visibility as low as one-quarter mile early Wednesday, creating hazardous conditions before the morning commute peaks.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday for Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties. Visibility may drop to 1,320 feet or less at times, especially near Lake Michigan and low-lying inland areas. Forecasters also warn patchy freezing fog could develop as temperatures dip to around 32 degrees.
The greatest impacts are expected along I-94 from downtown Milwaukee south through Racine and Kenosha, as well as on I-43 and US-45. Sudden visibility drops may occur within a few blocks, increasing the risk of rear-end crashes during the busiest travel hours. Elevated roadways and bridges could develop slick spots if freezing fog briefly coats surfaces.
Motorists should slow well below posted speed limits, use low-beam headlights and increase following distance. High beams can reflect off fog and worsen visibility. If ice develops, even light braking could lead to sliding on untreated ramps and overpasses.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise as temperatures climb and light winds mix the lower atmosphere. However, additional fog could expand north and west before midmorning. Drivers should allow extra travel time and monitor updated advisories in case the alert is extended beyond 9 a.m.
