Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Drivers across southeast Wisconsin should slow down immediately as light freezing drizzle creates slick spots on untreated roads, especially along I-94 and I-43 through 9 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, an area of light drizzle mixed with pockets of freezing drizzle is shifting east across southern Wisconsin early Tuesday morning. Surface temperatures at or below 32 degrees are allowing a thin glaze of ice to form on bridges, overpasses and untreated secondary roads.

The highest risk for slippery travel includes Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine and Kenosha counties, with impacts possible along I-894, I-794 and US-41 during the early commute. Even a light coating can reduce tire traction, particularly on elevated surfaces that cool faster than main roadways.

While the precipitation may weaken as it moves east, any lingering drizzle could continue producing isolated slick patches through midmorning. Road crews are monitoring conditions, but untreated sidewalks and parking lots may also become hazardous.

Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and avoid sudden braking. Allow extra travel time and use caution on ramps and overpasses where ice develops first. Pedestrians should watch for slippery walkways.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Tuesday morning as temperatures rise above freezing and precipitation tapers. Additional statements may be issued if icy spots persist beyond the morning commute.
