Milwaukee, WI – A welfare check in Milwaukee turned fatal Tuesday morning when a police officer struck and killed a person while responding to a call on the city’s south side.

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, officers were dispatched around 10:58 a.m. to the 1500 block of South 20th Street to check on an individual reportedly walking in and out of the street. While searching the area, an officer struck a person lying in the entrance of an alley with his squad car.

The individual, described only as an unidentified adult, was transported to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead by medical staff.

Police said the officer involved is a 44-year-old man with more than 18 years of service. He has been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure in cases involving officer-involved incidents.

The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team has been assigned to review the case, with the Waukesha Police Department serving as the lead agency. Authorities emphasized that the situation remains an active and ongoing investigation.

Officials added that video related to the incident will be released following department policy under Standard Operating Procedure 575.
