While searching the area, an officer struck a person lying in the entrance of an alley with his squad car.
The individual, described only as an unidentified adult, was transported to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead by medical staff.
Police said the officer involved is a 44-year-old man with more than 18 years of service. He has been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure in cases involving officer-involved incidents.
