Milwaukee, WI – A 39-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged in a wrong-way crash that left a pregnant woman severely injured and caused the death of her unborn child early Sunday morning, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

Authorities say the crash occurred around 4:24 a.m. on Interstate 43 near the Marquette Interchange, when Jorge Alvarez Mathuzima allegedly drove south in the northbound lanes, striking another SUV head-on. The vehicle, driven by a 33-year-old woman who was more than five months pregnant, rolled over and caught fire.

According to MCSO, deputies on freeway patrol responded immediately. One deputy, who had been passed moments earlier by Mathuzima’s SUV, reportedly broke the driver’s door open and pulled the woman to safety as flames spread. The deputy and the woman both suffered injuries and were hospitalized.

Toxicology results indicated Mathuzima’s blood alcohol content was 0.156%, nearly double Wisconsin’s legal limit of 0.08%. The unborn child later died at the hospital.

Mathuzima faces multiple charges, including first-degree reckless homicide of an unborn child, homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, and first-degree reckless injury. He also faces a misdemeanor OWI charge.

Sheriff Denita R. Ball commended the deputies’ quick response, stating their “decisive actions” prevented additional loss of life.
