Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Roads could turn slick overnight north of I-94 as freezing rain develops, creating hazardous travel just hours before a second round of strong storms targets the Thursday evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, freezing rain and sleet will develop late tonight into early Thursday morning, with up to 0.10 inches of ice possible across central Wisconsin and areas north of I-94. The greatest impacts are expected on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads during the early morning commute.
Temperatures will quickly rise above freezing by late morning, changing precipitation to rain across southern Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, Madison, and Kenosha. That transition sets the stage for a second, more dangerous phase.
By Thursday afternoon into early evening, strong to severe thunderstorms may develop, with damaging winds and hail as the primary threats. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, especially where skies clear and temperatures warm more ઝડપ across southeast Wisconsin.
Major corridors including I-94, I-43, and I-41 could see rapidly changing conditions from icy patches early to heavy rain and storms later in the day.
Residents are urged to use caution during the morning commute, then remain weather-aware for rapidly developing storms later Thursday. Additional warnings are likely as conditions evolve
