Milwaukee, Wis. – Drivers across southern Wisconsin faced patchy fog early Tuesday, particularly along and west of the Kettle Moraine, where visibility dropped below a mile in spots. Low-lying areas near rivers, lakes, and marshes were especially impacted, prompting warnings for slower travel and extra caution on the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Sullivan, storm chances will increase from northwest to southeast beginning late Tuesday night and persist through most of Wednesday. While severe weather is not expected, quick bursts of heavy rain, lightning, and brief gusty winds could make for hazardous travel, particularly on I-94, I-43, and other major roadways around Milwaukee, Madison, and Janesville.
Rain totals are expected to reach a quarter to half an inch in most locations, with locally higher amounts where downpours linger. The heaviest rain is likely between 2 and 5 p.m. Wednesday, which could affect afternoon school pickups and evening commutes across southeastern Wisconsin.
The weather service advises residents to allow extra travel time, use headlights in foggy conditions, and stay alert for ponding on roads during heavier downpours. Conditions will gradually improve by Wednesday night, with a drier stretch expected to return late in the week.
