Milwaukee, Wis. – Strong northeast winds will push 3- to 5-foot waves onto Lake Michigan beaches in Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties tonight, creating dangerous swimming conditions and the potential for life-threatening currents.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday through 4 a.m. Thursday. Forecasters warn of elevated wave heights, powerful rip currents, and hazardous conditions near piers and break walls.
The greatest risk will be along the north sides of piers, where currents are strongest and waves often break with the most force. Swimmers, kayakers, and paddleboarders are urged to avoid the water during the advisory. Local officials recommend staying well back from break walls and not entering the lake until conditions improve.
Travelers and beachgoers in Milwaukee’s Bradford Beach, Racine’s North Beach, and Simmons Island in Kenosha should exercise extreme caution. Wind gusts between 10 and 20 mph will keep surf rough into the overnight hours, making even experienced swimmers vulnerable.
The swimming risk is expected to subside after daybreak Thursday, but additional advisories may be issued later this week if winds shift again.
