Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall are expected across southeast Wisconsin Friday into early Saturday, raising concerns for standing water and localized flooding.
The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan says multiple rounds of rain will move across the region today and tonight, bringing widespread rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches.
In areas where storms repeatedly track over the same locations, locally higher rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches may occur.
Cities including Milwaukee, Madison, Racine, Kenosha, and Janesville could experience the heaviest rainfall as the system moves through southern Wisconsin.
Meteorologists say rain may occur in several waves throughout the day, with a brief lull possible during the late afternoon or early evening before heavier rain returns later tonight.
Heavy downpours may lead to standing water in low-lying areas, ditches, and along roadways, particularly where drainage is poor.
Urban areas may also experience minor flooding as storm drains struggle to keep up with heavier rainfall rates.
Runoff from heavy rain could also cause rivers, creeks, and streams to rise, potentially leading to small stream flooding in some communities.
Drivers should use caution when traveling during heavier rainfall periods, especially along major routes such as Interstate 94, Interstate 43, and Interstate 41, where water may accumulate on roadways.
Officials warn motorists to never drive through flooded roadways, as water depth can be difficult to judge.
Rainfall is expected to gradually taper off early Saturday morning as the storm system moves out of the region.
Residents across southeast Wisconsin are encouraged to stay weather aware and monitor forecast updates, particularly if additional rainfall develops overnight.
