Madison, Wis. – Heavy thunderstorms packing 60+ mph winds and torrential rainfall are expected to sweep across southern and central Wisconsin this afternoon, bringing a heightened risk of flash flooding and wind damage during the peak hours of 2 to 6 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, storms will intensify along a cold front between noon and 7 p.m., targeting cities like Madison, Milwaukee, West Bend, and Fond du Lac. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are likely north of I-94, with localized pockets exceeding 2 inches from Wisconsin Dells to Port Washington.
The greatest hazards include downed trees and powerlines, flooded intersections, and dangerous travel conditions—particularly in low-lying and urban areas. Locations with already saturated ground, such as Beaver Dam and Waupun, are especially vulnerable. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roads, and monitor weather alerts throughout the evening. The strongest storms are expected to move east of Lake Michigan after 7 p.m., but scattered showers may linger into the night.
Warnings remain in effect through 8 p.m., and additional advisories may be issued.
