Caribou, Maine – Much of northern and central Maine will dip to near freezing early Saturday, with frost likely to damage unprotected vegetation. The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory for Aroostook, Penobscot, and Piscataquis counties from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday, warning that sensitive plants may not survive the cold.
According to the National Weather Service office in Caribou, temperatures will fall to around 32 degrees in towns including Caribou, Houlton, Presque Isle, Millinocket, Dover-Foxcroft, and Greenville. Frost development is expected in open fields, valleys, and sheltered areas, while higher terrain may see slightly colder conditions. Officials note that Saturday night could be just as cold, if not colder.
Gardeners and homeowners are advised to cover flowers and vegetables or bring potted plants indoors before sunset Friday. Residents should also take precautions with outdoor plumbing and irrigation systems to avoid damage.
The advisory highlights the seasonal transition underway, as widespread frost signals the likely end of the growing season in parts of Maine. The Frost Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Saturday, with another round of cold possible Saturday night.
