Riverton, Nebraska – A minor earthquake shook parts of south-central Nebraska Monday afternoon, with a magnitude 2.6 tremor reported 14 kilometers south-southwest of Riverton.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 2:37 p.m. CDT (19:37 UTC) and originated at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers. No injuries or structural damage were immediately reported, and as of Monday evening, no felt reports had been submitted by residents.

Though light in magnitude, earthquakes in this region are uncommon. The tremor was part of a low-level seismic event that could be felt in nearby towns like Red Cloud, Franklin, and Naponee, especially in quieter indoor environments.

Officials recommend that residents review earthquake safety tips, including securing heavy furniture and knowing how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” in case of future tremors.

No additional seismic activity is currently expected, though the USGS will continue to monitor the area. Residents can report any shaking at earthquake.usgs.gov to help scientists refine data accuracy.
