Fort Wayne, IN – Drivers across northern Indiana, southern Michigan, and northwest Ohio should prepare for icy travel conditions early Friday as freezing rain develops before sunrise, potentially impacting the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to noon Friday for portions of LaGrange and Steuben counties in Indiana, St. Joseph, Branch, and Hillsdale counties in Michigan, and Williams and Fulton counties in Ohio.
Forecasters expect freezing rain capable of producing up to one-tenth of an inch of ice, enough to make roads, bridges, and overpasses slick. Even a light glaze can significantly increase the risk of crashes, particularly during the early morning travel window when temperatures remain below freezing.
Communities potentially impacted include Angola, LaGrange, Coldwater, Hillsdale, Sturgis, Bryan, Wauseon, and surrounding rural areas. The advisory coincides with the Friday morning commute, when untreated roads may quickly become hazardous.
The National Weather Service says difficult travel conditions are possible, especially on secondary roads and elevated surfaces. In addition to travel concerns, isolated power outages cannot be ruled out if ice accumulates on power lines and trees.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Residents should also be cautious when walking on sidewalks, steps, and driveways, which may become icy.
Motorists are encouraged to monitor real-time road conditions by dialing 511 for their state and to stay alert for updated advisories as conditions evolve through the morning.
