Omaha, Nebraska – Drivers across the central Midwest should prepare now for slick highways by Sunday night as a developing winter system targets Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri with accumulating snow and a rain-snow mix through Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, there is a 20 to 40 percent probability of impactful winter precipitation from Sunday through Tuesday, with the first round arriving Sunday into Sunday night, March 1st, primarily as snow. A second round is expected Monday afternoon into Tuesday, bringing a mix of rain and snow that could prolong travel concerns.
Statewide, eastern and central Nebraska face the highest potential for measurable snowfall Sunday night, including Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk and Columbus. Roads such as I-80 and Highway 75 could turn slick after sunset Sunday as pavement temperatures drop. In western Iowa, including Sioux City and Council Bluffs, snow may create reduced visibility and patchy accumulations before daybreak Monday.
Farther south, northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri, including Topeka and Kansas City, may see more mixing Monday into Tuesday, increasing the risk for slushy roads and slower commutes along I-70 and I-29.
Residents should monitor updated advisories, allow extra travel time and check road conditions through state DOT websites before heading out. Additional alerts could be issued as confidence in snowfall totals increases heading into the weekend.
