Bloomington, IL – Strong winds sweeping across Central Illinois and Indiana are expected to cause hazardous travel and minor damage through Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln and Indianapolis, southwesterly winds will increase mid-morning Friday and continue into the night, with sustained speeds of 20 to 25 mph and gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph. The affected areas include major cities like Bloomington, Peoria, Decatur, Springfield, Lafayette, Muncie, and Indianapolis.
Transportation routes across both states, including I-70, I-72, and I-74, could see challenges due to crosswinds. High-profile vehicles are especially at risk on these east-west corridors. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and prepare for possible downed branches or isolated power outages caused by falling limbs.
The gusty conditions follow a warm front lifting through the region, intensifying pressure gradients. While not uncommon in spring, today’s wind speeds are on the higher end for late March, especially across open farmland and flat urban stretches.
Drivers are advised to reduce speed and keep both hands on the wheel, especially in exposed areas. Power companies recommend charging mobile devices in case of localized outages and staying indoors during peak gust hours, projected between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
