Springfield, IL – Central Illinois residents should prepare for a significant shift in weather this week, with a cold front bringing rain and a dramatic temperature drop by Wednesday. After reaching the high 80s on Tuesday, highs are expected to plummet into the 60s, making it feel more like early fall.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service Central Illinois, there is a 30 to 40 percent chance of rain and storms across the region on Wednesday as the front moves in. This will be followed by a sharp downward turn in temperatures. Cities like Champaign, Peoria, and Springfield will see highs struggling to get out of the 60s by Thursday and Friday. The abrupt change could impact outdoor plans and travel, particularly on Wednesday when rain is most likely.

The best chance for precipitation appears to be Wednesday afternoon and evening, with Peoria and Springfield seeing the highest probability. By Thursday, the rain threat will have diminished, but the chilly air will remain. The combination of cooler temperatures and potential rain makes for a stark contrast to the late summer warmth the region has experienced.

Residents should take precautions, especially those with outdoor activities planned for the middle of the week. Dress in layers, and be prepared for a sudden change from summer-like conditions to a much cooler, wetter environment. The temperature swing is the most notable part of this system, with highs dropping by as much as 20 degrees in less than 24 hours.
