Quad Cities, Iowa/Illinois – Scattered thunderstorms could bring damaging winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning to parts of Iowa and Illinois late Friday, with the highest risk centered on the Quad Cities region.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a weak cold front will trigger storms starting Thursday, but the most widespread activity (with coverage between 40% and 70%) is expected from late Friday afternoon through Friday night. Rainfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour during peak storms, creating a risk for localized flash flooding.
While the overall severe threat is marginal (Level 1 of 5), forecasters warn of isolated wind damage, downed branches, and power outages. The storms may coincide with increasingly humid air, making conditions uncomfortable across eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois. Cities such as Davenport, Moline, and Rock Island could see active lightning and ponding on roads during the evening commute.
Residents are urged to monitor alerts, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms.
More storm chances could follow into the weekend as moisture remains in place.
