Chicago, Illinois – Snow squalls are possible today and tonight across a broad stretch of the Midwest from Nebraska to Indiana, potentially creating hazardous and fast-changing travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center.

In an updated social media briefing issued Friday morning, forecasters said snow squalls may develop along and behind an advancing arctic cold front moving east out of the Plains. While the highest confidence for snow squalls remains farther west, parts of Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana are included in an area where squalls are considered possible through tonight.

The Weather Prediction Center warned that snow squalls can produce brief bursts of heavy snow, gusty winds, and rapidly reduced visibility, sometimes dropping to near zero in minutes. Even short-lived squalls may lead to slick road conditions, especially on interstates and high-traffic commuter routes.

In addition to the snow threat, strong winds are forecast across much of the region, which could worsen travel impacts by blowing snow across roadways. Conditions may deteriorate quickly, even where skies appear clear just minutes earlier.

Drivers are urged to remain alert for sudden changes. If a snow squall is encountered and exiting the roadway is not possible, the National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down gradually, turn on headlights and hazard lights, and avoid hard braking.

The snow squall risk is expected to diminish later tonight as the system continues eastward, though lingering wind impacts may persist.
