Quad Cities, IA/IL – A powerful storm is set to bring high winds and snow to parts of the Midwest on Wednesday. Strong northwest winds of 40-50 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, could create whiteout conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, a west-to-east shift from rain to snow will occur Wednesday morning. Eastern Iowa, including Cedar Rapids and major highways like I-80 and I-280, could see hazardous conditions. Northeast Missouri is also at risk.
Drivers should expect reduced visibility and slippery roads. Localized whiteout conditions could make travel dangerous, particularly west of the Mississippi River. Snowfall could total 1-3 inches in some areas.
Authorities urge caution, advising drivers to allow extra travel time and check road conditions before heading out. High-profile vehicles may struggle with the intense wind gusts.
Residents should secure outdoor items and prepare for possible power outages. The storm could impact evening commutes as well.
