Madison, WI – With colder temperatures approaching across the Midwest, federal weather officials are urging homeowners in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa to start winterizing their homes now to prevent damage and stay safe during the coming freeze.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), taking time to prepare homes before the first frost can save residents thousands in repairs and improve overall safety.
NOAA recommends the following winter-prep steps for Midwest households:
- Inspect your chimney before use.
- Clean out gutters to prevent ice buildup and leaks.
- Insulate attics and exposed pipes to avoid freezing.
- Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows to block drafts.
- Install and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups.
- Gather emergency supplies, including blankets, flashlights, and non-perishable food.
Officials stress that Midwest residents, especially in rural areas, should check on neighbors and older adults who may need assistance with winter preparations.
NOAA warns that early-season temperature drops could hit parts of the upper Midwest in early November. More safety and preparedness tips are available at weather.gov.
