Des Moines, IA – The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Watches and Advisories across much of Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, and southwest Minnesota, warning of moderate to heavy snowfall and slick road conditions beginning early Saturday and lasting into Saturday night.
According to the NWS, the heaviest snow is expected across central and northern Iowa, where 4 to 7 inches may accumulate from Saturday afternoon through late Saturday night. Cities under watches include Des Moines, Ames, Fort Dodge, Boone, and Waterloo, while northwest and west-central Iowa, including Sioux City and Cherokee, fall under Winter Weather Advisories for 3 to 6 inches of snow.
In eastern South Dakota, areas from Sioux Falls to Yankton and parts of northeast Nebraska are expected to receive 2 to 5 inches of accumulation between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday.
Meteorologists warn that roads, bridges, and overpasses will quickly become slick, and visibility could drop sharply during periods of heavier snow. Motorists are urged to slow down, use caution, and check 511 travel updates before heading out.
The snow is forecast to spread eastward into central Iowa Saturday evening, tapering off overnight as the storm shifts toward the Great Lakes region by early Sunday.
